Review: NARS All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation

Everyone has been buzzing about NARS' new foundation release lately and I purposefully didn't watch/read/listen to any reviews because I wanted to be able to form my own opinion on it.

So let's start of with the superficial bit. The foundation is housed in a nice frosted glass bottle and even comes with a lovely pump and is $48...yes yes it's on the pricier end of the spectrum, so right off the bat I was thinking that this better nock my socks off.
NARS states that this is "oil free and delivers full, natural coverage with one drop, for lightweight, 16-hour wear."

I swear this photo is for shade reference purposes...The colour I chose was Ceylan (medium with yellow undertones) and it matches my neck and chest, which is always lighter than my face, perfectly. I'm around an NC 25-27...I think? I know for certain I'm not an NC30.

Here is where things might get a little controversial. I really REALLY did not like this foundation. Maybe my face is broken but I've tried a million and one different ways to apply this and each time it came out terrible and made my skin look so old...I'm only 26, I don't consider myself that old and I have fairly decent skin.

I've tried this...
  • with a Beauty Blender Sponge
  • with my fingers
  • with a brush
  • with and without moisturiser
  • with and without primer
I've tried it so many different ways and each gave me the same result: very dry, cracked, flakey looking skin....and I have combination oily skin, what!? For me this just sat on top of my skin rather than blending in and it definitely did not look natural. My face was so busy looking like the Sahara Desert that it had no chance of becoming oily or shiny, so I guess that's slightly a plus? Also, one pump for all over the face is a little bit of a stretch (try more like a pump and a half, at least).

After struggling with this foundation for a week I decided to look at a couple reviews to see if my problems were due purely to user error...and everyone seems to love this. I don't understand how it looks so gorgeous on everyone else and yet, it completely missed the mark for me.

It looks all great and lovely in the photo above...but oh boy, don't let that fool you. Are you ready for this...I took a crazy close up picture with my iPhone just so I could show you what was going on...

Do you see how dry and cracked it makes my face look?! Look at my chin and the corners of my mouth...and just basically everything. My skin is not normally like that and this is definitely not the look I strive for when applying foundation.

So all in all...this is definitely going back to Sephora. I would ask for a sample if you are thinking of trying this and if you are in anyway dry, just save your money and look somewhere else.

I was really hoping I would love this foundation because NARS is one of my favourite brands, but you can't win them all.

Have you tried this foundation? Any thoughts? Thanks so much for reading and I'll chat with you guys next week!

  1. Ugh I hate it when make up does that! That smash box foundation I bought last year (which was also steep at 42$) did the same thing. So frustrating. Great post girl. Such a good blog!

    1. Thank you my dear! Seriously, one of the worst foundations I've tried in a very long time. Grrr. >.<

  2. Oh my! I do have older skin-- today's my birthday in fact-- and I don't want it looking old, since I've taken damn good care of it. When I watched Lisa Eldridge use this in one of her makeup videos last week, I was jazzed, thinking I might splurge on this as a gift to myself--justify, right?-- but now, seeing your up close pic, I think not. At least, they had better give me a sample to try first at home. I know you're supposed to really work it like crazy, but I'd say you did that, from your description.

What a bummer, but thanks again for the honest, flat-out review. And you have lovely skin, gorgeous eyebrows and beautiful features, BTW-- but you knew that. Peace, Mari

    1. Happy belated birthday! I honestly don't understand how people can make this work for them...I've seriously tried EVERYTHING and nope nada, it looks terrible! >.<
      And thank you!!
